The Fleetwood Board have met to discuss several issues raised on the WhatsApp group alleging that the removal of the wooden fence represented a risk to children playing in the common area.
It should be noted that the fence was originally installed to prevent cars from being parked on the grass verge, and not as a security feature. The fence was removed firstly as it had deteriorated and we were concerned that anybody leaning up against or sitting on the fence could be injured. The second reason is aesthetic.
During the WhatsApp exchange it was suggested that the fence may be replaced with a hedge, similar to that on the opposite side of the road. On consideration and receipt of feedback from other residents the Board have decided to keep the area open and not to plant a hedge.
The safety of children and others using the streets and common areas is however of primary importance so we decided to look beyond the fence debate to what could and should be done to reduce the potential risks posed by vehicles in the Estate to children and other road users.
The rules of the estate already address “USING OF THE STREET” as shown below.

Speeding within the estate and failure to stop at intersections as been raised as two major hazards, compounded by parking in a manner which obstructs the road or visibility, causing cars to travel on the wrong side of the road.
Safety is the responsibility of everybody at Fleetwood and not something that the Board can do alone.
To reduce the aforementioned risks the board have resolved to ensure the enforcement of the above and all rules through the imposition of fines, as provide for in the conduct rules.
Additionally the common area and main intersection at the guardhouse is covered by CCTV. This will greatly improve monitoring in this area.
